Daycare days

Just wanted to leave these photos here.
Two dayhomes and one daycare center since he was a year old in two capitals: Ottawa and Yellowknife.

This May he is turning four, and it will be last month attending one. Come September, he starts JK.

My boy is growing. Life is going faster than I want it to.

March

To say that this winter was rough – is to say nothing at all…From being down with flu for almost two months, to two broken cars (that couldn’t be repaired in Northwest Territories and had to be transported to Alberta), we have nearly made it.

It’s March now. Today is just below 0. We’ve spent the weekend outdoors enjoying the warmth.

My mom was visiting. It was her third visit to Yellowknife, since we relocated. It was so comforting to have her with us for nearly two weeks. I love how she gets when she sees Aurora, or when we drive on the frozen lake. She fell for YK just like I did. I love that we share this feeling for this magical place.

Funny how after becoming a mother myself, I still miss time with my mom. And even though she nags me a lot (all Russian mothers do!), I love having her around.
G adores his “babyshek” and the way they played and bonded made me feel happy.

Winter blues are over. SO GLAD you are here, Spring!

Winter is coming

Don't want either of them to finish: GOT or the summer! They both been SOOOO good. How about your summer? Was it eventful, busy, relaxing?
I've been very impressed with summer here, in the North. Days were super long, warm and sunny. Without all the humidity that's been not so pleasant for me to deal with back in Ottawa. Now we are almost in the Fall, and I can't wait to see its colours, here...
Next up: garden update!

Power cut

This morning – just like that – all the lights in the whole town went out for almost an hour! What’s the big deal you might think – power cut. But let me tell you, when it’s -35 outside and the apartment starts to cool off in about 20 minutes – it’s a big deal! I couldn’t cook – the stove was not working, I couldn’t go online to check anything – the modem was out. Scary!
Thankfully it went back on, and life moved on in its usual pace.

Nobody said it’ll be easy

Four months in the North. Two full months of solo parenting. One day can pass by like a minute, another – like an eternity. It was a hard weekend. We both were sick, clingy and miserable. Saturday the babysitter came in, so I could get out for some groceries and a much needed break. To say the least, G wasn’t thrilled about my merely an hour absence. By the end of day Sunday, G lost it and scratched my face in the heat of a tantrum. I probably deserved it...

Grateful it’s Monday! even though it’s -29 outside.

Start

I feel that before talking about our recent change, I should at least bring you up to speed on the past two years. To say the least, they weren’t the easiest.

After my maternity leave ended in May 2015, I went back to work. Little did I know that my happy working self would merely last five months – things at work had changed while I was away and it was time to move on…

At the same time, V was starting up his new venture – a custom wood furniture shop and needed help with branding/website. G was just little over 17 months, so we decided that I’ll stay home, indefinitely.

We took him out of daycare and with that, my stay-at-home-mom days begun.
At the beginning it wasn’t bad, pardon me my straightforwardness; I was busy helping out V, it was wintertime and days were filled with social engagements and events. I barely was noticing the change. In February, we went to visit my parents in Maine, stayed with them for about a month and before you know it, it was springtime. Coming April, we went to Mexico for a short getaway. Only after our arrival, the reality of staying home kicked in.

How exactly was it for me? Well, I was pretty much driven by the sheer thought of “husband will eventually come home”, and I’ll have some me-time, some time for activities other than cooking, laundry, walks to the playground. During the days, every opportunity I had to get out of the house with G – I took. Funny, but looking back on that time now, I was the most social self☺ I’ve met some very awesome mothers in the community and always had somebody to go with for a coffee, for a stroll in the park or just hang out. That’s what actually helped me through those tough times – support of women around me.

I was also deep into new job search. I was determined to find something that will bring change…not just a change to my “stay-at-home “status but to our life in general…not sure how to describe it, but for some reason I knew that relocating would be a new start. So I applied all over Canada. Without going too much into the detail about the job search (I’m sure you’ve all been through it), I was offered a position in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

So here I am, a working mom with a job that makes me smile and a toddler who smiles back at me at the end of every work day when I pick him up.

This is our story… let’s begin.

Out of the blue, I know. But better late than ever, right? And look, it's only been two years:) I can’t wait to share the latest news of our little family. Just need to wrap my head around where to start…

Oh, this place is our new home. Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. We’re loving it here so far☺

Snowy neighbourhood

It’s official – winter is here. Tonight we were hit by the first snowstorm this season. We woke up to this white noise and I couldn’t resist sneaking out to take a few shots before the neighbourhood got fully awaken:

Maslenitsa brunch

Today we said our “goodbyes” to winter and “hello” to spring by making and eating lots of blini (pancakes). That’s what Maslenitsa is basically about. In Russian tradition, we celebrate the beginning of spring and end of winter by making lots of blini  that are to be shared. You can eat them with meat, caviar, sour cream, jams, pretty much anything you like, as long as you have blini wrapped around your stuffing.

I like this celebration and would like to continue the tradition. Blini are easy to make and their shape represents the sun that we are getting more and more of at this time of year. I think that deserves a celebration.

A friend of mine got so excited about the season change; he decided to express it with a little “blini art”:

Seasons play switch

February 27, 2013 on the way home

Every morning I step out of the house and right before I get into my car to drive to work, I stop for a moment to breathe in the air. Mmmm, I smell spring, I hear birds singing, snow quietly thawing away and I smile for the new beginning of a new season.

Until we get hit by a snowstorm, like today.

Not only was I not mentally prepared to be thrown back into winter; I wasn’t prepared to be walking to the bus station at the end of the day. Due to severe traffic on the roads, V couldn’t make it to pick me up. Thankfully, my dear colleague gave me a ride to the bus station (thanks M!) and another one kindly offered to take shelter at her place in case if I want to wait it out (thanks K, and for taking the picture too). But I decided to get home, no matter what. So with my office poncho wrapped around, I bravely made my way through the snow! And after almost two-hour bus ride, I was home:)
Couldn’t help but admire the beautiful winter scenery on my walk. Perhaps, last time this year.

Snowshoeing at Gatineau Park

Finally, we did it. We got out of the house and onto the wild!
Thank you NCC for this engaging, free snowshoeing activity. We now know how to read animal trails!
Honestly we had a blast. If only we can do outings like this more often. I always thought that in order to enjoy winter scenery you have to participate in some kind of a winter sport such as skiing or snowboarding and you will need to fully commit to it: buy the equipment, park passes, etc. Turns out, it can be as simple as snowshoeing walk in the park that can make up for a fun and affordable winter activity. Not to mention - less risky:)

Staying put

I only went outside to dig out the driveway a bit and it was brutal. Not only there is tons of heavy snow, it’s also very windy.
I'm so following my mom's advice: stay put and bake some pies:)

Winter is here

As we do not have a habit of checking the weather forecast, we woke up to this white surprise this morning. And although the drive to work was a bit dreadful (no winter tires installed yet!), I have to admit that I am looking forward to a magical Winter!
On the other note, my cold is gone, bathroom renovation has been started and lots of activities to look forward to!
